Rame Parklet
2018
Among many of the challenges facing today’s world, lack of social interaction and communication between citizens is one of the critical issues. The following project presents the product of a design-build studio that uses adaptive/Kinetic systems to generate creative solutions to social problems and optimize public space usage.
Nowadays, the impact of technological growth on people’s lives has caused our community to change towards a more privatized and secluded life. Therefore, the role of urban public spaces in social life has become more significant. This community outreach project, created architectural urban spaces, Parklets, as urban platforms for increasing social interactions and supporting local businesses.
Parklets are temporary sidewalk extensions that provide more space and amenities for people using the street by converting a parking space or loading zone to public use which results in further social connections, an increase in public vibrancy, and support for local businesses. We design and built a transformable Parklet that can change its shaps based on the different needs of the community. The project aims to explore ways to improve the efficiency of space usage at different times. The canopies with colorful shading provide a pleasant outdoor space for local businesses in the neighborhood while increasing the social interaction among people in the community. It is designed based on water collection and reuses the harvested rainwater for irrigation of the greenery embedded on each side of the parklet and in the middle of each canopy.
